Bar 【Tokyo Craft Beer Guide】6 Beer Bars & Breweries Recommended by Local Beer Lovers

2025/11/07

Tokyo is home to countless places where you can enjoy distinctive craft beers from all over Japan.

From long-established beer bars beloved by locals to brewery-owned taprooms, each place is packed with its own character — a mix of Tokyo’s personality and the the brewers’ passion.

In this article, our beer-loving editorial team introduces six hand-picked spots we personally visited and recommend. Whether it’s your first trip to Tokyo or your next beer adventure, you’re sure to find a pint worth remembering.

1. Beer Club Popeye

1-minute walk from JR Ryogoku Station

Located in Ryogoku, Tokyo, Beer Club Popeye is a craft beer bar that has been serving beer since 1995. It was one of the first places in Japan to offer Echigo Beer, known as the country’s first craft beer, and is regarded by many beer fans as a pioneering spot in Japan’s craft beer culture.

With 100 taps and more than 70 kinds of craft beer available at all times, each beer is carefully served with the temperature, pressure, and flow adjusted to suit its style.

The bar often gets busy, so it’s best to make a reservation. You can enjoy it with family or friends, or stop by alone. The counter seats are especially nice when visiting solo — just watching the beers being poured can be a pleasant moment in itself.

A modern, stylish brewery and taproom was created by a design company. The first floor features counter seats with a view of the brewing tanks, while the second floor offers a spacious, café-like atmosphere where guests can relax.

The bar offers eight taps of its own craft beer, all brewed in-house. Instead of fixed flagship brews, their lineup changes with the seasons, and use ingredients like seasonal fruits and spices to reflect the time of year.

The interior is simple yet warm, creating a comfortable space that invites visitors to linger. Some customers come alone to read a book or work on their laptops while enjoying a beer. It’s a place where you can unwind with a drink, much like spending time at a cozy café.
